If you ride well, carefully, and follow a local guide, you’re unlikely to be stopped, especially if you have a valid international license and adhere to speed limits. The only issue is insurance. Most travel insurance companies will not cover accidents if the rider does not have a Vietnamese motorbike license.
Where to Buy Insurance in Vietnam?
The two major insurance companies in Vietnam are Bao Viet (National Insurance Company) and Gras Savoye Willis (a French Insurance Broker). Unfortunately, they do not provide coverage for riders without a Vietnamese motorbike license. Obtaining a Vietnamese motorbike license or converting your existing license is a lengthy process that requires at least a 3-month resident visa and 5–7 working days to complete the necessary paperwork.
